Customer Case Study: Outdoor Learning Trail @ Singapore River
Litespeed Education and Zhonghua Primary piloted an Outdoor Learning Trail along the Singapore River from the 15th to 19th of September 2008. The objective of this Learning Trail was to combine elements of Singapore’s history and dynamic outdoor learning, while leveraging on ICT in a mobile learning environment. The IT HOD Mr Tham Chor Kee, residential trainer, ICT Executive and teachers from Zhonghua Primary School facilitated 6 classes through the learning process on the trail. The ETD observation team from MOE was present to garner learning points from this pilot project.

The Outdoor Learning Trail detailed a process flow for the eight groups of students:

  1. Students were given handouts by teachers stating the objectives of the project. For example, to produce a digital story of an early settler.

  2. Students were then assigned to their various points (The Raffles Statue, A Great Emporium, Chetitiars to Financiers or The River Merchants.) At these points, students took pictures of the early settlers and were told to read the inscriptions on the statues.

  3. Students made use of 3G technology to surf the Internet and gather information for their PowerPoint presentation.

  4. Students made use of the information gathered and the photographs they had taken to come up with PowerPoint slides.

  5. Once students were done with their PowerPoint slides, the teacher- in- charge, Mr Tham, interacted with students using the Virtual Workspace application. Mr Tham then made use of the file-transfer and chat feature to converse with students.

  6. Lastly, students were trained to receive and transfer files back to Mr Tham.
